Khai Dinh tomb is one of the most unique architectural features of the royal art in Hue city. It is about 9 kilometers to the south of the city center on a steep hill on a mountain named Chau Chu, on the outskirts of Hue city. The royal tomb of Khai Dinh is a unique blend of Western and Eastern architecture. The tomb became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 as part of the Complex of Hue

Khai Dinh was born in 1885 and died in 1925. He was the 12th Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty in Vietnam, reigning from 1916 to 1925. His name at birth was Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Đao.

Khai Dinh was the 12th king of the Nguyen Dynasty and the last to build the mausoleum. The tomb was built in 1920 and completed in 1931. The Nguyen Emperor Khai Dinh’s Royal Tomb is unique among the royal tombs in Hue, Vietnam. Where other royal tombs are expansive and invite respectful reflection, Khai Dinh built his final resting place to be monumental in style and bombastic in execution.

Ung Lang has a more modest area than the mausoleums of other Nguyen kings. The mausoleum is only 117 m x 48.5 m in size, but it is designed and built extremely elaborately and takes a lot of time. King Khai Dinh sent people to France, China, and Japan to buy materials from iron, steel, roof tiles to porcelain, and colored glass… to build and decorate works.

Nghi Mon Gate is decorated with elaborate dragons, to enter the main room of the mausoleum, you will have to step up 127 steps.

Next, what you should not miss is  Thien Dinh Palace. It is at the highest position and is the main architecture of the Mausoleum. The palace has five parts connecting with a floor decorated with marble. In the center is the place to put the grave of Khai Dinh. Here, there is also a statue of the Emperor following to Western-style cast in France.  Under the statue is the coffin and Khai Dinh is the only emperor revealing his coffin place. The interior is densely decorated and inlaid with intricately designed glass and porcelain. The floor is tiled with glazed flowers, and the ceiling is painted with nine dragons appearing in the ephemeral clouds.

Especially the Buu tan on the bronze statue, weighing 1 ton with soft and elegant curves, makes viewers feel like it’s made of very gentle silk. Below Buu Can is a bronze statue of King Khai Dinh cast in France in 1922 at the request of the king. The person who is mainly responsible for creating artistic masterpieces in Khai Dinh Tomb is artist Phan Van Tac, the author of three of the largest “Cuu Long An Van” frescoes in our country, decorated on the ceiling three spaces between Thien Dinh palace.

Khai Dinh Tomb is the pinnacle of the art of shaping crockery and glass, this is really a work of artistic and architectural value. Travel to Hue.
