This is a lagoon located in the Tam Giang – Cau Hai lagoon system. The area is about 52 km², stretching about 24 km in the northwest-southeast direction from the mouth of the O Lau River to the mouth of the Perfume River, in the territory of Hue city and two districts of Phong Dien and Quang Dien in Thua Thien Hue province. This place is a large lagoon in Vietnam, accounting for about 11% of the country’s coastal lagoon area.

Tam Giang Lagoon is the intersection of rivers, the mouth to the sea is narrow, so there are many whirlpools, big waves, and strong winds that easily cause boats to capsize, so boats do not dare to cross. The depth of this lagoon is from 2 to 4 m, some places are up to 7 m deep. Every year, thousands of tons of seafood, fish, and shrimp are exploited in the lagoon.

In the past, Tam Giang lagoon along with Thuan An estuary and Perfume River were the main waterways to Hue citadel. Before the name Tam Giang, this lagoon was called Hac Hai until 1821. Since the old days, Tam Giang used to be impoverished and dangerous open water with no roads and electricity. Tam Giang Lagoon is the intersection of rivers, the entrance to the sea is narrow, so there are many whirlpools, big waves, and winds that easily cause boats to capsize, so boats do not dare to cross. Later, in the Nguyen Dynasty, there was an official named Nguyen Khoa Dang who sent his soldiers to break the bottom of the water and open the door to the sea. Since then, the number of shipwrecks and shipwrecks has decreased.
