Gia Long tomb was built on the remote and desolate Thien Tho Son mountain, located in Dinh Mon village, Huong Tho commune, Huong Tra district, Hue city. Gia Long Tomb recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The construction of the mausoleum lasted for six years, from 1814 to 1820. Originally, the tomb was constructed for Emperor Gia Long’s first wife, Thua Thien empress. But lately, It became Gia Long’s and some of his family members’ burial sites.

An entire mausoleum area is a group of mountains with 42 large and small hills, each with its own name, of which Dai Thien Tho is the largest mountain chosen as the mausoleum’s criminal record and is used to name the whole group of mountains: Thien Tho Son.

Entering into the burial area is the Royal court-yard with some imposing stones sculptures of horses, elephants, civil and military servants. In the center of the burial area is the double grave of Gia Long emperor and Thua Thien empress next to each other- a symbol of happiness and loyalty.

The middle part is the tomb of the king and Queen Thua Thien Cao. Passing the courtyard with rows of majestic stone statues and seven steps of the worship-yard is Buu Thanh at the top of the hill. In the center of the burial area are the double graves of Gia Long emperor and Thua Thien empress next to each other- a symbol of happiness and loyalty.

On the right of the burial area is the Minh Thanh Temple. It is the place where they set up altars to worship Gia Long emperor and his first Queen.

On the left of the tomb is Bi Dinh. There is the only large stele with the inscription “Minh Duc Than Cong” of Minh Mang emperor to praise his father’s life and accomplishments, which was carved very elaborately and exquisitely.
