Located downstream of the Perfume River, Ru Cha is a rare primeval mangrove forest that exists in Tam Giang lagoon. The forest belongs to Thuan Hoa village (Huong Phong commune), about 15km from the center of Hue city. Ru Cha is the only primeval mangrove forest in the middle of Tam Giang Lagoon, the largest lagoon system in Southeast Asia. The scenery here is like a picture of pristine, fresh and gentle nature, attracting all eyes.

Ru Cha, which has a total area of about five hectares, attracts visitors thanks to its primitiveness and its name. According to local people, “Ru” means “forest,” while “Cha” is the most typical tree here, accounting for more than 90% of the forest.

How to get to Ru Cha

From the center of Hue city, following National Road No 49 to the direction of Thuan An beach, about 9 km. There will be a sign: go straight to Thuan An beach, turn left and cross Tam Giang bridge. You choose to turn left in the direction of Tam Giang bridge, go about 4 km to Ru Cha.

If you are already at Thuan An fishing port, you can reach Ru Cha primeval forest by taking a boat or fishing boat. Once you cross the sea gate and reach the end of Thuan Hoa village (Huong Phong commune, Huong Tra district), Ru Cha will appear in front of you with its vast blue expanse.

In Ru Cha, there is also an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of Mrs. Duc Thanh Mau. According to oral tradition, during a great flood, the Altar of the Holy Mother from Hon Chen temple drifted here. The villagers saw it and set up a temple to worship her. As a sacred spot, people often come here to worship, burn incense, and make offerings. The villagers also celebrate the death anniversary of the Holy Mother on the 3rd day of the third lunar month every year, in particular.

The best time to visit Ru Cha is from February to September every year when the entire forest adorns a colorful, poetic, and strangely romantic outfit. Early September is an especially beautiful time to visit as it marks the beginning of the blooming season for the Cha trees, which display brilliant flowers.

This place is also home to a rich biological system typical of the Tam Giang lagoon area, including fish, shrimp, crab, and more. This creates favorable conditions for aquaculture cultivation by the locals.
